It was an easy enough assignment: fill-in on the X-Files and find Mulder.

Doggett had never expected to find someone who would break his heart the way the redhead gazing at him from her lovers hospital bedside had. Her blue eyes seemed alive for the first time in months as they wordlessly conveyed to him her gratitude, relief, and overwhelming happiness.

His breath caught in his throat when he realized she seemed a little sad too.

It felt like he had been punched in the gut.

And he felt like a bastard for being selfish enough to still love her.
